Nikon V1: The Secret Weapon for Street Photography?

Is there such a thing as a "hidden gem" in the world of discontinued cameras? I think I found one.
In my latest search for a portable, capable, and budget-friendly street photography setup, I stumbled upon the Nikon V1. Despite being discontinued, this camera fits perfectly into today’s market—especially for those who value size and character over raw megapixels.

The Specs: Small Size, Big Potential
The Nikon V1 features a 1-inch sensor with a 10.1-megapixel resolution. While that might sound modest by modern standards, the images it produces have a beautiful color science that is quintessentially Nikon.
One of the standout features for me is the 2.7x crop factor. I’ve been using it with the 10mm f/2.8 lens, which effectively gives me a 27mm equivalent—a classic and versatile focal length for street work. If you're looking for even more versatility, you can use the FT1 adapter to mount older F-mount Nikon lenses, which makes this tiny body surprisingly powerful.
Viewfinder: It has a built-in EVF, which is a massive prerequisite for me when looking at older cameras.
Battery Life: It uses the EN-EL15 battery—the exact same one in my Nikon Z8! On this smaller body, the battery feels like it runs forever.
ISO Range: It handles ISO 100 to 3200 (expandable to 6400). Rather than trying to "clean up" the noise, I’ve started to embrace it; it gives the shots a film-like quality that adds to the street aesthetic.

Performance on the Streets: Testing the 27mm
I took the V1 out for a test run, and I’ll be honest: I wasn't disappointed. I usually prefer longer focal lengths (50mm to 85mm) for street photography to keep some distance. However, the 27mm equivalent on the V1 forced me to get close to the action. It was a testing but rewarding experience that changes how you interact with your subjects.
What surprised me most was the Expeed 3 processor and the autofocus. I left it in full-time AF (with 135 focus points) and let the camera choose the subject. It was "bang on" almost every time, intuitively picking exactly what I was looking at through the viewfinder.
The "Secret" Features
The V1 has some surprising tricks up its sleeve that are perfect for modern social media:
Burst Shooting: It can hit a phenomenal 60fps(with AF locked) or 10fps using the mechanical shutter.
Ultra-Fast Shutter: You can reach 1/4,000s mechanically, but the electronic shutter goes all the way up to 1/16,000s.
Slow Motion: It can shoot at 400fps or even 1,200fps. While the resolution drops at these speeds, stacking these slow-motion clips is a creative goldmine for Instagram Reels or YouTube Shorts.
Final Thoughts: Is it worth it?
I picked this up for £160 (including the lens and a 5-year guarantee). For that price, the value is phenomenal. If you shoot to print, you'll find that for standard sizes, there isn't a huge difference between this and a much more expensive setup.
If you are on a budget and looking for a dedicated street camera that doesn't scream "professional" but delivers high-quality results, the Nikon V1 is a highly recommended choice.
